Week15 Interactions Between the 3 Levels

Representational
The role it plays in the whole is that you can put pictures faces of people you know and this program makes then dance around and sing. Its been very popular during Christmas time and it makes people laugh at seeing others they know dancing around. Its something that you send to your friends, so it also works as a greeting card,  "i was thinking of you." The portraits of people you know are abstracted by the body of the elf body dancing and communicates to viewers as a fun way to say happy holidays as a functional purposes. It makes people happy to watch, if you haven't done it, you should because its very funny. it makes for a great multi level design and idea because there is a huge amount of great creativity, i found myself asking hey why didn't i think if that?! And to use vocabulary, it's assignment is to greet friends and send them something for the holidays but manipulating the whole holiday card into a new humorous way of receiving a note by using portraits of people you know.

Abstract

The role abstraction plays is the since that these bodies don't belong to the faces of the people you know. And its dancing around and singing Christmas carols and this gives a very humorous impact. Again, makes it very funny for the viewer. It also incorporates three different types of media, a still photograph (the face)  filming (because the body are actual dancing people) but the graphics and decorations are all computerized. for the idea to work you need the abstract combination of the face on the fake body,
Symbolic

you need to know what Christmas elves are, Santa little helpers! we seem to think everyone knows this but its very possible that other cultures don't really know about Santa clause and his elves at the north pole. I think that to our culture this is very funny, but its so possible that other cultures might think its still funny if they used pictures of people they new, but wont understand the context of it being Christmas time and sending a greeting to a friend or family member in celebration of it. It is a cheery and fun way to send a card for the holidays.

Symbolic=Christmas greeting card, our culture knows it, others might not have any idea whats going on.

Week 14 Application (Blog) Exercise

Why is the Representation example representational and how does that operate for the viewer?
-its representational because we all know what a chandaleir looks like, it has crystals around it and it hangs from the ceiling with light bulbs inside the protection of the crystals to shine light out in a very clasic prysmic manner. This Particular chandalier happends to be shaped like a penis. In many cultures this could be symbolic to ward of enemies or as a sign of power r perhaps a brothal, but here its just a lovely centerpeice to a living room of a gay mans home.

In what way is the Abstraction example abstract, from what does the abstraction derive, what does it communicate to the viewer and how?
-This is an abstract painting of a piano and the environment its in. The keys of the piano tell us that it is in fact a piano, because we know what music books look like we assume that's what the white shape resembles one so that's what it looks like to us. With the things Ive mentioned along with the information of the left side and leg the painting has given us enough information that this abstract painting is in fact at piano.

What about your example of Symbolism is symbolic, what does it denote and how, how would a person know that?
-this is symbolic to me and anyone who lives in my culture as giving a helping hand to others generates love. It would make since if we saw this around a Jesus center or in volunteer offices. We would know that the orange shapes make hands enclosing a heart. We would know this because we know what hands look like, with five fingers and hearts are one of the first things we learn how to draw as small children. It reminds us to love one another by giving a helping hand to someone less fortunate.

Week 12 Blog Exercise / Visual Techniques

 Instability, irregularity, activeness, distortion, sharpness, repetition, singularity

 Activeness, sequentially, accuracy, opacity, exaggeration

Both of these advertisements are very active, you know that guy wearing Dicky's will keep flying through the air, while you can feel how bouncy that spiraled depiction of a Quakers oatmeal box is, but like a spring we know it might balance or it could fall over, we are left to decide that. There is irregularity and distortion in the Quakers can because we know that its really not shaped like a spiral, so that forces the viewer to try to understand what the designer was trying to get across, or what message they were sending To me it says a bounce start to your day, or a way to spring you out of bed. We like the sharpness of the image, its a very clean image and we know what were looking at. if it were fuzzy that might cause ambiguity. As for the Dicky's ad, as a viewer this tells me that i can do anything in these jeans, there for work and play, and the opacity of the "wear them to death" phrase makes for a great contrast on the light gray washed out image, its a strong contrast in large dark letters that pops out and catches out attention. Its Asymmetrical obviously, and its Sequentially because we know what is going to happen, hes going to fly and fall. I feel there exaggeration, because that leads us to believe he was riding his bike very fast to get him to fly that high. Both are great advertisements that suit the company there promoting for. This is what I'm passionate about, logos for clients and I dig both of these ads don't by Goodby, Silverstein & Partners.

Week 11

This is a Great example of effective contrast in this design. Bright illuminating color on the black night s really sharpens and makes the advertisement pop out at you. Scale is used as a tool to explain that the silhouette figures are important because we know from common knowledge that humans cant be that large next to planet. I think that there is a harmonious balance to it because the top half is heavier with the image of a planet however, the silhouette in the center and the silver halo sign balance it. This image even has use of chiaroscuro, the meaning of lightness vs dark from Rembrandt. Also because this image is strikingly sharper from the edge of the highlighted planet it makes it a great example of contrast. Also there is a great contrast of tone causing the effect of "dominance and recessives"-Dondis. There is also a great contrast in shape, its its the only sharper in the whole image

 I see this as a bad example contrast in design because the pattern is so ambiguous that it blurs together and creates optical illusions with our eye. The design just doesn't exhibit polar opposites of anything, except for direction i suppose. And it takes away from the Olympic symbol, probably one of the most widely recognized symbol in the world and i had to look for a while before that was what i saw. Not only that, the Olympic sign is even in color, one of the strongest elements. Because of the blurring of the lined pattern i don't see sharpness, this is because its blurred. Also there is a lack of contrast with tone.  The many black and white lines defuses it, almost makes it look gray in some areas that we see. Here there is no contrast in shape, its all the same in a harmonious rhythm together.

OPTION 1 Week 10

 

In both of these images the mascot of this advertising campaign for Scrubbing bubbles is an animates scrubber. The 2-D animation is still obviously, but is implying motion. With the bubbles larger behind him and floating off implies that he moving forward quickly to clean. It always has a little tilt forward to where hes looking implying movement forward, if he wasn't to move forward with his lean/tilt he would for sure fall over on his face. The bubbles are also smaller under the front of him witch gives us the clue that because hes moving forward there is no opportunity for any bubbles to come out in front of him. I think that this little animation for the face of this Johnson and Johnson product is very smart. Its easy and get the point across and its animation uses implied movement, so it's even cooler.

This image is from the 3-D computer animated Disney film the Incredibles. This characters super power is speed obviously, but even more this implied motion graphic is very successful in conveying he's running, and fast. His hair is whipping back behind him, his arms in a running with human like stride that we recognize from our cognitive memory. His suit is arrow dynamic and this his body has all its weight in front so power forward. Also his feet and legs are in line to run. I feel this 2-d picture is a great depiction of showing what this characters super power side can do.

Week 9 Blog Exercise – Dimension/Depth/Space

I chose this example because I think it relates to a graphic depiction of the illusion of space. In this 3-D animation there are a many elements found that we learned this week. For instance the linear depth is the first thing i noticed. The lines go back and up and reminds me of  looking at the bottom of a steep slide or something similar to that. Then the texture gradient, the squares are large and slightly misshapen then very rectangle then become perfect squares again. We know in actuality the squares closest to us are perfect because of our knowledge of relative size. Then the shading convergence gives helps give us  proximity clues, and tells us hoe close the ball it to us and and gives us information that the top or the picture is further away from us. I would even say there is a use of Atmospheric perspective because the lines get out of focus and fuzzy as they go away from us in the picture plane.  Focusing on the clock the face uses peripheral vision causing a fish eye lens, and shading to help describe the 3-dimensionality of the sphere. The sphere itself overlaps the space of the background, giving us information that it is closer to u

Week 8 Application (Blog) Exercise: Tone and Color

This is a favorite poster of mine.


a) Tone is operating in this example because of the black almost "negative" figures. The way it’s placed shows us where the calf muscle is on the front left surfer. It also communicates to us witch surfer is closer and witch is further away, and tone is helped shown in the shadows of the figures in the sand.


b) Tone is interacting with shape most interestingly in this poster. The tone depends on the shape, we would be clueless as to what was what because this picture lacks any depth by color for us.


c) Color is operating in this example by giving us the only information on what time of day it is and what it-taking place. We know its sunset at the beach because of the overlapping orange sand over the yellow setting sun, casting a pink sunset. It’s as simple as it gets.


d) Color of this poster is interacting with balance most interestingly for me. Because of the % of the colors used to take up the space, the pink, being more dominant has less of it, with the black on the less dominant orange keeps it from popping out to much. And the yellow is a nice centering balance for us. And even though there are two figures on the right the one figure balances them out by being larger (because it is closer).

Week 7 Blog Exercise

This Chair/rocking chair design was so eye catching I had to pick this one to talk about. The 3 of Dondis Basic Elements I find most prominent in this one is number one- movement, number two- color, and three- shape.

Movement it active in the roundness of the bottom part of the structure, I instantly visualized myself rocking in it, and its large enough to put your feet on to dictate the shifting of weight. This movement performs attractively to the viewer because it’s a motion of comfort. Being rocked as a little child, or to fall asleep just like in nursery rhyme songs we heard at a young age. The person sitting in the chair looks comfortable, because of the quality it’s hard to see how cushy the chair is but I can’t imagine its plastic.

Color is just popping out at us, yelling look at me! Against the white it is visually appealing, also the little flower on the ground was a nice touch by the photographer. The red/pink on the inside is active because their will always be different shadows and a different glares of light on it so as it rocks back and for the color is always changing. It's creating an eye catching chair that you can break your sight from it performs for its self. Just the fact that the color is only on the inside creates an extra dynamic visual appeal.

Shape is huge in this chair. Its shaped like a bean, now I know that’s not a "primary shape" however its what we recognize so that’s what we relate it to. In actuality it’s really half-circle on top of another half-circle that connect on the sides. Its active because is looks like it would fit the back of the human body comfortably, and the shape of the design works for itself because we want to sit in it, to experience how it feels. And the fact that its hallow just makes it all the more interesting, like the shape could actively change if someone who might weigh more sat in the chair opposed to someone who weighs less.

Week 6 Blog Exercise - Design Success and Failure in Relation to Syntactical Guidelines

My future is hopefully in advertisement logos for big companies. This is a logo for MTV music television entertainment, and a poor one at that in my opinion. Its not visually stimulating of stressed in the least bit, which it should be because this television program prides themselves on being wild, crazy, fresh, everything you haven't seen before will be seen here first kind of attitude. This Design with flowers behind what appears to be a big metal M doesn't even give incite to what MTV if you had know idea who MTV was.

 

this is a great depiction of a successful logo for MTV. The design is stressed by being at an angle and shifted to the right a little making it unbalanced however the big red rolling stones logo on the left makes it balanced because it draws so much attention. And the bright colors on the dark background makes the design pop. This is a far more successful example of a logo where Syntactical Guidelines have been put to good use.

WK 5 Blog Exercise: Visual vs Symbolic Language

Description: There is a dirty street and side walks, people from all over come to wait in line all day for a bowl of soup because they are homeless or so poverty stricken that they cant even feed themselves or there family. the line of the poor stretches around the corner of an old bulding and far into the distance that the people waiting begin to become so small they look like ants. Thats how many people are waiting. Its cold outside, everyone has a dark coat, dark heavy pants and a hat, no bare limbs show on anyone. The shoes on there feet are old and beat up, there feet are soar and there handd cold. The picture is in bacl and white, it looks like it was in the late 1800's, the years of our countries great deppression.  

Top-Down Visual Processing

This is a good example of high attention top down processing and lower the lower level of top-down processing. First our attention is driven to take notice of the puzzle shapes to map out where they fit. There is movement in this because we can plainly see where the pieces go and we are ready to place them there if given the opportunity. We link and connect with the pieces out of place and the ones already in place which makes it every active. As for the lower level of of the processing we note that the puzzle pieces we are trying to connect are a lighter color. Hence, they are on the darker contrasting background. Then you of course take notice of the silhouette of the man on the right but we know he really provides no clue to helping us put together the puzzle other than that fact that he might be trying to do the same thing. If we were to use a rapid eye movement tracker on the photo, I predict that the most time spent would be on the outlines of the puzzle shapes.
